Theme Project: Create exhibits to honor Hoosiers who contributed to Indiana's growth from 1830 to 1900.


1.Identify Important Hoosiers As you work through this unit, make a list of the important people from Indiana during the 1800s. Then choose at least four people from the list to feature in your exhibit. Write the names of people you choose on the blanks below.

2. Biographies Using your textbook and other reference books to find out more about the people for your exhibit. Then write a short biography of each person. Write about any interesting stories or events in their lives. Then describe the important contributions they made to Indiana or the United States.

3. Find Quotations Do some research in books of quotations or on the Internet to find any quotations from the people in your exhibit. Write the quotations below. Don't forget to write down the name of the person you are quoting.

4. Collect Images Find pictures or portraits of the Hoosiers you chose for your exhibit. Make drawings that illustrate the contributions they made to Indiana or the United States.

5. Build the Exhibit Decide how you want to arrange the items in your exhibit. You may want to create a large poster on which you can paste the biographies, pictures, drawings, etc. Use stencils to add the quotations to the poster. Add a title or hang a banner. Arrange the items you don't put on the poster on a table around the poster.

6. Share Your Work Display your exhibit with your classmates' to make an “Important Hoosiers: 1830-1900” museum. Discuss the items in your exhibit with other students.
