Theme Project: Create your own issue of Arkansas Magazine. Write and illustrate articles to highlight important events in Arkansas' past and present.

1. Plan the Content As you work on this unit, make a list of events, people and places you want to tell about in your magazine. Think about how Arkansas has changed through history and how people in your state live now. Consider information about landforms, population, and culture. You may also find it helpful to look at real magazines for design and article ideas. Refine your list into a table of contents showing at least five articles, with a title for each.

2. Write the Articles Make an outline for each article or feature, telling the main idea and listing the important points you want to communicate. Then write a draft of each article. Find or create maps, graphs, or pictures to go with each article. Make quick sketches of illustrations or maps. Review the drafts or sketches for accuracy, spelling and grammar. Make the corrections and add the pictures and titles to create your final drafts.

4. Publish Figure out the order in which you want your articles and where you want your maps and pictures. Put the pages together and number them. Make a final version of your table of contents, including page numbers. Then, create a cover for your magazine, and staple it and the articles together. Share your finished magazine with your classmates.
