Theme Project: Think about a business you could start in your school. It might be a business in which you make something -- like muffins. It might be a business in which you do something for others -- like wash cars.

1. Create a List What type of business do you want to start? It is a good idea to work at something you really like. To help you decide on a kind of business, write some of your skills and hobbies below.

2. Do Market Research For your business to be a success, it has to make or give something that people want or need. Market research will help you find out the types of businesses that will be useful to others. Begin by telling your classmates, teachers, and other people in your school about your business ideas. Ask them if your ideas are things they would want or need. Ask them how much they would pay for these goods or services. Take notes on people's suggestions.

5. Create an Advertisement Advertising will help people learn more about your business. It will also make people interested in buying your product or service. To create an advertisement, first, write a short description of your business. Describe your business so that people will want to be your customers. Make sure to include the following points in your description:

  • The name of your business
  • The product or services you provide
  • The price you charge
  • The location of your business

Next, make colorful pictures of what you will be selling. This will allow people to see examples of the product or services that they can buy from you.

Paste your description and your pictures on a large piece of paper. Make copies of your advertisement so that you can give them to several people, or hang them in your classroom.
