Theme Project: Start your own newspaper called the “Northeast News” to tell people in other regions about life in the Northeast.

1. Do Research The people who read your newspaper will want to know about the land, people, places, and products of the Northeast. Visit your school or local library and use reference books, newspapers, magazines, or Internet sources to find information on these topics. As you gather information, write down ideas for articles for your newspaper on the lines below.

2. Write Articles Choose at least four ideas from the list above. Write an article for each one. Make sure to create a headline for each article.

3. Gather Pictures Find or draw pictures for each of the articles you have written. Include captions to explain to the reader what the pictures are about.

4. Create Advertisements Make a list of some of the products made in the Northeast. Choose at least three of these products and create an advertisement for each one. Make sure to describe the products in such a way that will make readers want to buy them. Include a drawing or a photograph of the products.

5. Design the Newspaper Choose a format for your newspaper. Divide the newspaper into different sections such as “News,” “Business,” “People,” “Sports,” and “Weather.” Select the articles and pictures that will go in each section. You may want to look at newspapers in your community for other ideas on how to design your newspaper. Next, draw sketches that shows the arrangement of the articles and pictures on each page. This is called the layout.

6. Create the Newspaper Paste the articles and pictures of each section of your newspaper onto large pieces of paper or onto posterboards. Or, you may choose to use a computer to create the pages. Make sure to include the name of your newspaper on the first page.

7. Distribute the Newspaper Make several copies of your newspaper and distribute them to your classmates, friends and family members.
