The World I See
Lesson at a Glance
Unit 4, Lesson 5: Faraway Places (pp. 114-117)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Appreciation Students learn about places
around the United States and the world.
- Remind students that this unit is called "Going Places."
Show students a map of the United States and a globe. Have
volunteers talk about places in the country and the world
where they have visited or lived. Tell them that all the
people who live in our country agree to live by its rules
and laws. Then show students a flag of the United States.
Explain that our flag has 50 stars that stand for the 50
states in our country today.
Check for Understanding
- Have students cut out a large circle of white paper and then,
using a globe for a model, draw continents in green and oceans in blue.
- Reread the poem "The Edge of the World." Have students illustrate
one of the stanzas from the poem.
