The World I See
Lesson at a Glance
Unit 4, Lesson 4: A Journey Long Ago (pp. 108-113)
The Big Idea
Framework Concepts: Past/Present Students
learn about the concepts of past and present by listening to a
story of a journey long ago.
- Draw a long line on the board labeled with the words yesterday
on the left end of the line, today on the middle point of the line,
and the word tomorrow on the right end of the line. Have a volunteer
talk about what they did on those days. Then discuss the meaning of
the word past by telling children that things that happened before
the present are in the past. The past can be as short as a few minutes
ago or made up of many, many yesterdays. Have students identify when
Josephina lived (in the past).
Check for Understanding
- Have students tell you the names of things that Josephina's
family brought in their covered wagon when they moved west. List
their suggestions on the board. Then have students add those words
to their own drawings of a covered wagon.
- Have students draw pictures of things they think each member
of their family would want to bring on a wagon train. Help them
label each item and tell why they chose it.
