The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Community Communities grow and change and people work together
to solve problems.
- Reread the last paragraph from Up Goes the Skyscraper. Then have students look again
at the illustrations of a skyscraper being built on Big Book pages 17 and 18. Ask students
why they think the author called the skyscraper "beautiful." Then ask them what words they
would use to describe a skyscraper and why.
Check for Understanding
- Invite pairs of students to role play an interview between a reporter and a
construction worker who helps build skyscrapers. The interviewer may want to
dictate questions to ask the worker. You may want to tape the interviews.
- Have students make their own sequence book of building a skyscraper. They can use
the steps shown on Big Book pages 17 and 18 for reference.
