Lesson at a Glance
Unit 3, Lesson 5: Building a Community (pp. 80-83)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Community Students discuss what goes into building a
whole community and then use blocks to build their own community.
- Display Big Book page 16. Have students complete this sentence for each of the four
illustrations on the page: If I was a child in the picture, I would ____________. Invite
volunteers to complete the sentence, telling what they would do to help build a model
community. Discuss with students their opinions about the town the children in the
illustrations created.
Check for Understanding
- Have students each contribute lines to a class poem that describes a city they
helped build with blocks or one they would like to build.
- Have students make a three-dimensional city mobile using various containers
such as empty milk cartons.
