Unit 3, Lesson 3: Using a Map (pp. 72-75)
The Big Idea
Framework Concepts: Map/Community A map shows the locations of places in a community.
- Have students work with you to make a list of all the ways the picture and the
map on pages 13 and 14 are the same and all the ways they are different. Ask: How
would you use each page? Help students to realize that the map on page 14 is a view
from above of the picture on page 13. Explain that the picture gives better details,
but the map can be more helpful for getting from one place to another.
Check for Understanding
- Ask students to draw pictures and label three places in their neighborhoods.
Have them draw a street connecting the places and trace a route from one place to another.
- Have students use blocks on a large piece of construction paper to recreate
the map shown on page 14.
