The World I See
Lesson at a Glance
Unit 2, Lesson 5: Where We Live (pp. 48-51)
The Big Idea
Framework Concepts: Appreciation and Neighborhood Students look at homes in their neighborhood and explore some different kinds of homes around the world.
- Draw several different houses on the board, such as a ranch house, an apartment building, a tent, a log cabin, and a row house. First have students mention the name of each kind of house and tell whether it is a house they have ever seen or lived in. Then discuss how the houses are similar and different.
Check for Understanding
- Have students use modeling clay or craft sticks to make a model of their house or a house they would like to live in. Have students describe the features of their finished houses.
- Give students construction paper of different geometric shapes in different colors. Have students design a home. They can paste the shapes onto a piece of paper to make a house, or a neighborhood of houses.
