Lesson at a Glance
Unit 2, Lesson 3: Special Times Together (pp. 40-43)
The Big Idea
Framework Concepts: Appreciation, Sharing, and Respect Thinking about many different ways people share special times helps students develop an appreciation for their own special celebrations.
- Display a classroom calendar and talk about any special days that occur during the month. Then share the illustrations on Big Book page 8 and other pictures of people sharing special times together. Have students look at each picture and tell which event the people in the pictures are celebrating. Then ask students to tell about a special time they have shared with friends and family, and name some holidays that most Americans celebrate (such as Fourth of July or Thanksgiving).
Check for Understanding
- Have students play a game of charades. Give small groups a special time or holiday to act out, such as a birthday party, a Thanksgiving Day feast, or some other celebration. As the group acts out the event, have the class guess which event they are portraying. Afterward, have students name all of the special times they reenacted.
- Have students draw their favorite special time. Encourage them to decide if their favorite time matches any of the illustrated events on Big Book page 8.
