The Big Idea
Framework Concepts: Similarities/Differences and Roles Students recognize similarities and differences among families and learn about family roles.

Have several volunteers complete each of these sentence starters:

A family is ___________.
A family needs ___________.
A family wants ___________.
A family shares ___________.

Use students' responses to discuss how the things families need and want are similar and different. Suggest questions, such as: Do families share the same things? How might the things your family shares be different from the things or the same as the things Malusi and Gogo have in Not So Fast, Songololo?

Check for Understanding

Have students retell the story of Not So Fast, Songololo using the pictures from the Big Book. Ask them to include in their retelling the setting (the city), characters (Malusi and his grandmother), and events (Malusi and Gogo buy new shoes. Gogo has a hard time keeping up with Malusi because he walks too fast.).
Have students look at the illustrations in Not So Fast, Songololo that showed Malusi and Gogo had a special relationship. Ask them to draw another scene from the story that illustrates this.
