The World I See
Lesson at a Glance
Unit 1, Lesson 1: Getting to Know You (pp. 8-11)
The Big Idea
Framework Concepts: Change and Differences Children identify changes in emotions caused by certain actions.
- Sing "If You're Happy and You Know It" again with children. Then ask when Jim (from the read aloud story on page 9) might have sung this song and why. Discuss how his feelings changed from the beginning of the day to the end. Ask children if their friends have ever helped them feel better about something that happened during the course of a day.
Check for Understanding
- Have children role-play a classroom scene from another day at school in which Jim makes friends with other students. Children can play the parts of Jim, Paul, Anna-Maria, and several other children.
- Give children a paper plate. On one side, have them draw Jim at the beginning of the day. On the other side, they should draw him at the end of the day. Then reread different parts of "Will I Have a Friend?" Have children hold up the face that shows how Jim felt during that part of the day.
