Writing Guidelines

Why Write an Activity?
You've probably already written lots of activities that support your Houghton Mifflin Social Studies program. Wouldn't it be nice to share those great activities with other teachers around the world? We'll publish them right here in From My Class to Yours. And, of course, you'll be able to take advantage of all the activities written by other teachers, and use them in your classroom.

What to Do

  1. Think about an activity that you do in your classroom to support or extend your Houghton Mifflin Social Studies program. The activity can be one that you've done many times before, or it can be a completely new one that you created especially for From My Class to Yours.

  2. Include the objective of the activity. This will let other teachers know right away if this is an activity that they might be interested in using in their classrooms.

  3. State what unit in Houghton Mifflin Social Studies you think your activity works best with. Doing this will allow teachers to scan the activities quickly and choose the ones that will work with the specifc unit they teaching at the time.

  4. Take a look at the Grade 3 activities that have already been posted. They might give you an idea of what format to use for your activity.

  5. Here's a tip for submitting your activity. Type your activity in your favorite word processing program. Then when you're ready to submit it, copy and paste it into the text box on the Submit Activity form. If your browser does not support forms, cut and paste your activity into an e-mail, and send it to class@hmco.com.

What You Might Want to Do (optional)
Here's a couple of other things (not necessary for posting) that you might want to include with your activity.

  • Integrate the Internet into your activity by adding links to appropriate Web sites. To see how it's done, take a look at the Extensions section of the activity called Dance Sticks written by Joni Simon and Joyce Yamagishi, Grade 3/4 teachers from California.
  • Include a mini-biography of yourself at the end of your activity. This will help to personalize your activity for all those teachers who will use it in their classrooms. Tell the world whatever you want about yourself and/or your school or classroom.
  • Submit a photograph of yourself. To submit a photo it must be in jpeg or gif format. Because you won't be able to attach the photo to our submit form, please e-mail your gif or jpeg photo as an attachment to class@hmco.com. Please include your full name and the title of your activity.
