- Discuss with students how the Revolutionary War created many hardships and changes for civilians as well as soldiers.
- Share with students the role African-Americans, women, and Native Americans played in the war. Encourage them to understand why the Native Americans generally sided with the British.

Check for Understanding
- Assign each student one of the following roles: soldier in British army, soldier in American army, African-American, Patriot woman, Loyalist woman, Native American. Ask each one to write a journal entry as that person about the experience of war.
- Ask students to draw a mural depicting the colonists' struggle for independence. Encourage students to show battle scenes as well as domestic and political struggles.
