I. Buildup of Southern Forces
B. The challenges the Southern army faced included: inexperienced
recruits, few supplies such as uniforms or artillery, and little
money to purchase these supplies.
C. The advantages the Southern army had included: knowledge of the
land and climate where they were fighting, nearness to supplies,
support of local inhabitants, and skilled and determined soldiers
and generals.
II. The Powerful North
B. The North had a strong navy which blocked Southern ports
from moving goods and trade, and controlled Southern river traffic.
C. The North could produce its own manufactured goods, but
the South would lose both Northern and European goods during
the war, because of the blockade of their ports.

A. Under the command of General Robert E. Lee, thousands of Southern
soldiers were recruited and trained.
A. The Northern army greatly outnumbered the Southern army, and
controlled 70 percent of all the railroads.
