I. People Move Westward for New Opportunities
B. Both slaves and free blacks also moved westward. Slaves worked to turn wilderness
into cotton plantations, while free blacks farmed or took jobs as cowhands and miners.
C. Travel west was slow and difficult on toll roads which were mainly narrow dirt passages.
II. Pioneers Settle the West
B. After moving west, settlers built the public institutions like schools, churches, and governing bodies which were necessary to maintain a community.
