II. Immigrants Become Americans

    A. Most new immigrants were poor, uneducated, and untrained, so they had to take physically difficult, low-paying jobs.

    B. Many immigrants faced discrimination and even violence as they searched for housing and jobs.

    C. Immigrants struggled to hold on to their cultural traditions, in spite of pressure to become "Americans."

    D. Immigrants' customs enhanced American society, and their hard work helped make the United States an industrial giant.
