    A. Between 1870 and 1920, entrepreneurs built companies and helped the United States grow into an industrial giant.

    B. Big business depended on capital, which is property or large amounts of money that came from banks or the government.

    C. Large companies made high profits for their investors and owners.

III. Realizing the American Dream
    A. Some wealthy entrepreneurs began their lives with little or no money, and achieved "the American Dream" of rising from poverty to wealth through hard work.

    B. Some people who achieved great wealth, like Andrew Carnegie, believed they had a responsibility to give back some of their wealth to society.
