Your Own Journey

Read the Rules of Travel below. Review the mission for the Roman explorer, Indian merchant, Arab missionary, or Chinese merchant. Then choose one role and begin your mission. If you don't recognize the name of a place in your instructions, use an atlas and your research notes to find it and add it to your map. Use the rules and the map scale to learn how much time each part of your mission will take. (For example, traveling 600 miles on a camel will take 20 days.)

Rules of Travel:
1. Modes of transportation include horse-drawn wagons, sailing ships, and camel caravans.
2. Horse-drawn wagons travel 60 miles a day, but can only be used in India, China, and in Europe.
3. Camel caravans travel 30 miles a day and can be used in the deserts of North Africa, Arabia, Persia, and Central Asia.
4. Travel over mountain ranges takes twice as long.
5. Ocean travel between the Red Sea and India takes two months. Ocean travel between China and India takes two months. All other ocean travel is at a rate of 30 miles a day.
