Lesson at a Glance
Chapter 7, Lesson 3: The Mughal Empire
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Diversity During their 200-year rule, the Muslim rulers of the Mughal Empire conquered Muslim and Hindu lands in north and central India and Afghanistan, and created a culture of splendor and wealth.
- Tell students that during the reign of Akbar, conflicts between Hindus and Muslims lessened because of his tolerance and wise rule. On the board, list some of Akbar's successes in this area. Then ask students to suggest other ways in which a wise ruler might foster respect and understanding between people of differing traditions.

Check for Understanding
- Have students write Akbar's will, including a letter to his descendant Aurangzeb. What advice would they give on ruling an empire?
- Have students create an illustrated chart showing the five great Mughal rulers (Babur, Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan, and Aurangzeb) and the characteristics and accomplishments of each. Ask students to include the dates that each emperor ruled.
