Chapter 7, Lesson 2: The Ottoman Empire (pp. 170-177)

The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Continuity Around 1300, the Ottoman Empire began its 600-year rule, conquering neighboring lands and creating highly developed social and political institutions which lasted until the 1900s.

Emphasize the link between strong leadership and the continuity of the Ottoman Empire. Ask students to brainstorm the kinds of leadership qualities that might make a sultan a successful leader, especially in holding together an empire or building up power. List them on the board. Then ask students to note the antonyms for the qualities listed and discuss why they might lead to the disintegration of an empire.

Check for Understanding

Have students write a tribute to Suleiman that describes his accomplishments. Ask students to imagine that this tribute would be put on the outside of a building in Istanbul.
Ask students to design a tugra for their own name. Have them look at the one on page 175 as an example.
