The Big Idea
Framework Concept: CultureUnder Abbasid rule, the Islamic Empire experienced a golden age. The capital city of Baghdad became a thriving center of Muslim trade, learning, and culture.
- Tell students that a "golden age" is a period of high cultural achievement. Brainstorm a list of the kinds of cultural achievements that characterize a "golden age," and what might be the conditions that lead to a "golden age."

Check for Understanding
- Have students imagine that they live in Baghdad under the Abbasids. Ask them to write a letter, poem, or essay describing their lives and their culture.
- Bring in some examples of Islamic calligraphy and design or use the examples in the book. Ask students to create a poster illustrating some of the cultural achievements of the golden age, making use of Islamic design styles in their work.
