I. Calvin and the Reformation
B. Another reformer, John Calvin, taught the theory of predestination.
C. Calvinism emphasized predestination, the belief that God has determined salvation in advance, and a strict moral code.
II. Other Protestant Movements
B. Henry VIII of England set up the Church of England independent of the pope.
III. The Church's Response
B. As part of the reforms, the church encouraged the founding of new religious groups, or orders.
C. The church revived the Inquisition, a church court to judge and convict heretics, or people who disagreed with accepted beliefs.
