The Big Idea
Framework Concepts: Culture and Values Despite the miles and years that separated feudal Japan and feudal Europe, both societies depended on a specially trained warrior class to provide security for people at all levels of society.

Remind students that samurai warriors and knights played an important role in the daily life of Japanese and European feudal societies. Ask students to consider how the role of feudal warriors differed from the role of the military in our society. How do they think the lack of a strong central government in feudal societies might have contributed to the importance of warriors? How does our society value warriors today?
