Lesson at a Glance
Chapter 1, Lesson 3: Traveling Through the Past (pp. 16-19)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Change Historians' understanding of the past continually changes as new evidence is found.
- Discuss with students how people can have different views of the same event, and one's understanding of an event can change over time as new evidence is introduced. Use an example from the schoolyard or children's own lives.

Check for Understanding
- What evidence will future historians have to study our lives? Have students gather items from home or the classroom, such as books, food, and tools, that might be clues someday. Then have students write a paragraph about each item, and describe what it might tell a future historian about our lives.
- Choose a topic or event that interests students, such as a sport, a famous person, or an important battle. Have students create a classroom resource center about the event or topic, using primary and secondary sources and any artifacts they can find.
