Chapter 13, Lesson 4: Scientific Revolution (pp. 353-356)

The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Technology In the 1500s, scientists began to question ancient beliefs about the universe and to rely instead on observation and experimentation to understand the natural world.

Tell students that the Reformation fostered a climate of questioning that helped usher in the Scientific Revolution. Discuss how questioning the established view of the world might alarm or upset well-meaning people.

Check for Understanding

Ask students to write a paragraph explaining how they have used the scientific method to gather information in their science classes or at home. Then ask them to choose a subject that they might research in the future and explain how they would use the scientific method to conduct their research.
Have students create an illustrated timeline including at least five of the great thinkers of the Scientific Revolution and their accomplishments.
