Across the Centuries
Lesson at a Glance
Chapter 13, Lesson 3: Era of Reformation (pp. 349-352)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Diversity As the concept of church reform spread across Europe, a number of Protestant thinkers created new churches.
- Write the words "Protestant Reformation" on the board. Ask volunteers to create a word web on the board, showing how the Reformation affected Catholicism and Protestantism. Discuss how the religious reformers held different beliefs and formed new Protestant churches. Ask students why they think so many new religious ideas appeared in such a short span of time.

Check for Understanding
- Have students imagine that they are traveling throughout Europe during the Reformation. Ask them to choose a country of origin, a profession, and a religion, then write two or three letters "home" explaining the religious changes they witness.
- Ask students to work in pairs to make a chart titled Major Religious Groups During the Reformation. Have students list each religious group and explain their respective beliefs and practices.
