Houghton Mifflin Social Studies
A Message of Ancient Days
Lesson at a Glance
Chapter 1, Lesson 1: Links with the Past (pp. 4-9)
The Big Idea
Framework Concepts: Continuity and Change Studying history helps us to understand how people, places, and ways of life can remain the same or change over time.
- Discuss with students the things they know about life in the past. Some students may have visited museums or explored places preserved from long ago. Others may have heard stories about the past from family members. Encourage them to share their knowledge. Help students understand that objects, places, and stories help us study the past.

Check for Understanding
- Have students write about an object or photograph from their home or school that tells something about life in the past. Encourage students to point out ways in which the past was similar to and different from life today.
- Have students create a scrapbook of photographs or illustrations from the past. Have them use clues in the photographs to tell what life might have been like during the times shown. Some clues might be clothing, tools, styles of buildings, and different forms of transportation.
