A Message of Ancient Days
Lesson at a Glance
Chapter 4, Lesson 3: Hunters and Gatherers (pp. 106-114)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Change Humans developed increasingly complex cultures, showing more advanced tools, funeral rites, and art.
- Use the chart on page 114 to review with students the differences and similarities between four of the early human groups discussed in this chapter. Remind students that no evidence means we have not found indications of activity in this area, not that activity definitely did not occur.

Check for Understanding
- Have each student make a chart with the headings from the top and left hand side of the chart on page 114. Then, call out various elements listed on the chart, and have students write where the element belongs on the chart. For example: you might say "controlled fire, 400,000 years ago" and students would write that in the Fire column under Homo erectus.
- Have students create a "cave painting" on butcher block paper that shows the development of human culture from the time of Homo erectus to the time of the Cro-Magnons.
