The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Culture The goals of archaeology have changed since 1900, and because of that, the methods used have also changed.

Compare and contrast the archaeological methods used in Tutankhamen's tomb excavation with those used at Koster, in western Illinois. Be sure students understand the difference between treasure hunting and knowledge hunting.

Check for Understanding

Divide the students into working groups and assign each group the task of criticizing or defending the approach used by Howard Carter in Egypt. Have a spokesperson present each group's points.
Have students draw and label a small object from the classroom as though they were future archaeologists examining it for the first time. Encourage them to show as much detail as possible.
