Chapter 12, Lesson 4: Contributions of the Greeks (pp. 383-387)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Culture Greek contributions in the areas of government, art, science, and medicine have profoundly affected Western civilization.
- Point out the contributions of the Greeks in the areas of literature, art, and history. Discuss with students where in daily life they find elements of Greek culture. Encourage them to come up examples from architecture, art, and history.
- Outline the importance of Greek thought and exploration of ideas on medicine, astronomy, mathematics and philosophy. Use the Socratic method as part the discussion and then discuss students' experience of the questioning method.

Use the Lesson Outline to preview the content of the lesson. You may wish to print it for your students as a guide during reading.
Check for Understanding
- Have pairs of students choose part of Lesson 4 to teach to each other using
the Socratic method of asking questions. Each student should write down three
questions to ask their partner. For example, "What do you notice about the statue on
page 385?" Or "What subjects do you think the Greeks wrote comedies about?"
- Have students draw a design for a school building or sports facility using elements of Greek architecture. They can refer to pages 388 and 389 of their text for ideas.
