The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Culture Alexander the Great spread Greek culture throughout the many lands he conquered.
- Describe Philip and Alexander's rise to power and their attitude toward Greek culture. Summarize Alexander's campaign to conquer other lands, and his system of controlling those lands after his army moved on.
- Discuss the impact of the museum and library at Alexandria on the western world
even to today. Talk about the division of Alexander's empire after his death, and point out that Alexander has remained a powerful figure in stories and art for over a thousand years.

Check for Understanding
- Have students reread the A Closer Look about Alexander's Conquests. Ask each to write a journal entry as a soldier of Alexander from any point of the campaign, using the map and captions for additional information.
- Ask students to design a monument to Alexander the Great that shows the extent of his conquests and his contribution to world learning.
