A Message of Ancient Days
Lesson at a Glance
Chapter 10, Lesson 3: Religious Developments (pp. 315-321)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Change Today's practice of Christianity and
Judaism developed during Israel's period of religious and political turmoil.
- Outline the story of Jesus' role in the founding of Christianity, and
place his teachings in the context of the Torah. Review what Jesus taught
about the kingdom of God being at hand. Remind students that his followers'
belief that he was the messiah challenged the authorities.
- Summarize the Jews attempts to achieve independence from Rome, ending in
A.D. 132, when they lost the right to live in Jerusalem. Outline the ways in
which they held their culture and religion together while separated from their
homeland and each other.

Check for Understanding
- Have students make a brief outline of the ways in which Jesus' teachings were
part of traditional Jewish thinking and the ways in which they were different.
- Ask each student to draw representations of the two things that helped Jews
maintain their religion and culture after they were forced to leave Jerusalem.
Have them explain and discuss their choices.
