A Message of Ancient Days
Lesson at a Glance
Chapter 1, Lesson 3: Moving into the Future (pp. 16-19)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Interdependence People in the future will be affected by the decisions we make today.
- Discuss with students how decisions they make may have positive or negative consequences in the future. Brainstorm examples of everyday decisions and the effects they can have. For example, studying for a test may help you perform well, while not studying may make you perform badly. Then challenge students to give examples of how our decisions about the environment may affect the future.

Check for Understanding
- Another problem we face today is pollution. Many rivers, lakes, and streams are filled with garbage and chemicals. People today cannot fish or swim in these waters. Many are worried that the pollution will grow worse. Have students write an essay about how our decisions about pollution might impact the lives of future generations.
- One way people today try to reduce waste and save the forests for the future is by recycling paper products. Have the class investigate your school's or community's recycling program. Then design a campaign to increase awareness about the program and help people recycle more efficiently. If you do not have a recycling program in your school or community, create a plan for one.
