Houghton Mifflin Social Studies
A Message of Ancient Days

About the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies Program
Your child is about to begin a new year in the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies program. The goal of the program is to develop knowledge, skills, and civic values needed for children to become responsible citizens in the twenty-first century. It does this by presenting social studies as a well-told story about the people who have shaped our world. At the heart of the program is the belief that students learn best when they are fascinated by what they are learning.

Since words tell only part of the story, Houghton Mifflin Social Studies has created a visually appealing and stimulating series of books filled with a rich and vivid collection of maps, charts, graphs, documents, paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, and artifacts.

An Exciting Year Ahead with A Message of Ancient Days
This year your child, using A Message of Ancient Days, will study the history of the ancient world. The focus will be:

Throughout the year, students will also read related books from the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies Library.

How You Can Help
Throughout the year, we will be asking you to participate in your child's learning. The world outside the classroom is rich in history. Your encouragement, support, and sharing of your life experiences will greatly expand your child's learning.

During the school year, you will receive several newsletters like this one. Each one will summarize the content your child is studying. It will also suggest specific activities tied to each lesson that you can do at home with your child. These activities are designed to reinforce and add meaning to the classroom experience. The activities may involve playing a game, studying a map, reading a story or newspaper, or visiting a local library. This work with your child at home will help expand his or her understanding and enjoyment of social studies.
