Chapter 8, Lesson 4: Trade in New England (pp. 198-201)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Interconnectedness The merchant trade brought goods to New England that could not be grown or produced there.
- Begin by discussing how different countries trade with one another. Talk about some of the things the United States trades with other countries, such as Canada, Mexico, or Japan. Then talk about the things that colonists in New England would have had to trade to countries abroad and what they would have gotten in return. Use a world map to point out any countries mentioned.

Check for Understanding
- Have students write a paragraph that tells how trade may have affected the life of a child growing up in a New England colonial city.
- Draw the outline of the map on p. 199 on butcher paper and have students attach yarn to show the shipping routes the merchants would take to transport cargoes to the colonies. Then have them draw pictures of the cargo the merchants carried on each part of the route.
