The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Conflict When the settlers in Jamestown did not agree with Governor Berkeley about controlling Indian attacks, Nathaniel Bacon led a rebellion.

Begin by discussing what happens in society when a person who leads the government does not listen to the concerns of people he or she is leading. Help the class make a chart that lists the good and bad characteristics of Governor Berkeley and Nathaniel Bacon.

Ask students to debate the two sides of the Bacon and Berkeley fight--whether settlers should take Indian land and then protect it.
