Chapter 6, Lesson 3: English Settlement in New England (pp. 138-142)
The Big Idea
Framework Concepts: Conflict and Change Economic hardships and religious persecution caused the Pilgrims to settle in New England.
- Begin by discussing what students already know about the Pilgrims and their settling in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Ask them who came, why they came, and what happened once they got there. List their responses. After reading, have them add to the list what they have learned.
- Ask students what might make people want to leave their homeland and go to a new country to live and work. Then ask them why they think the Pilgrims left England and came to America.
