The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Change While some people left the cities for the suburbs, the arrival of immigrants and people from rural areas kept the populations of cities growing.

Read the excerpt from Sister Carrie on page 530. Then talk about why students think Caroline Meeber came to Chicago. Discuss any problems they think she might have once she gets there.

Have students list problems that cities might have had between 1880 to 1910. Point out that the arrival of immigrants and people from rural areas were causing city populations to grow.

Check for Understanding

Ask students to imagine what it may have been like to be the father in a middle class family in 1910. Have students tell why the family decided to move to a suburb.
Have students draw two pictures -- one of a family living in a ghetto in 1900, and the other of a family living in a suburb in the same year.
