Chapter 19, Lesson 1: Outbreak of the War (pp. 476-482)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Conflicts and Values As the war progressed, soldiers on both sides suffered and the emancipation of southern slaves became a goal for the North.
- Have students study the chart on page 476. Based on it, do they think the war between the North and South will be long or short? Who do they predict will win? Record their responses on the board and return to them after reading the lesson. Discuss why the chart may not be an accurate indicator of the war's outcome.
- Have a volunteer read the lesson opener aloud. Discuss with students the comment made by Theodore's grandmother. What do they think she meant by "brother should rise against brother"?

Check for Understanding
- Have half of the class write recruiting speeches for the army in the North. Have the other half write recruiting speeches for the army in the South. Remind students that they are trying to convince people to become soldiers.
- Divide students into pairs. Have half of the pairs create a recruiting poster for the army in the North. Have the other half create a recruiting poster for the army in the South. Encourage them to think about the ideas they are trying to convey. What images could they use to convey these ideals?
