Lesson at a Glance
Chapter 18, Lesson 2: The Growing Conflict (pp. 450-456)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Conflict The growing conflict divided the United States into two regions, North and South, where people felt less and less part of one nation.
- Ask students to discuss what they think might have happened between the northern and southern states when other territories wanted to become states. Then ask students how books and speeches could have influenced people to oppose or support slavery.
- Write the title Uncle Tom's Cabin and the term Underground Railroad on the chalkboard. Ask students to keep these terms in mind as they read Lesson 2

Check for Understanding
- Ask students to pretend they are a northerner or a southerner and they have just read Uncle Tom's Cabin. Have them tell how the book affects how they feel about slavery.
- On a map, have students point to the free states, the slave states, the territories open to slavery, and the territories closed to slavery as established by the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854.
