- Read aloud Horace Greeley's description on page 434. Talk about why they think he wrote the description and what might be done by concerned citizens to help the individuals described. Continue the discussion to include what people can do when something is wrong in society.

Check for Understanding
- Ask students to write a speech Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, or Sojourner Truth might have given.
- Have students create a bulletin board entitled "Making a Better Society." Have them include what people were doing to improve living conditions in cities from 1830 to 1860.
