Chapter 17, Lesson 3: Life in Northern Cities (pp. 430-433)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Change The Industrial Revolution created crowded northern cities filled with slums, crime, and poverty.
- Read aloud the description written by Dr. Greene on page 430. Then discuss with students what they think life in these cities was now like. List their responses and revise and add to them after reading the lesson.
- Ask students what services a city provides for the people who live there, such as plumbing, garbage collection, fresh drinking water, police protection, and so on. Discuss why each service is necessary for people to experience good living conditions.

Check for Understanding
- Ask students to imagine they are the mayor of New York City in 1845. Ask them what problems the mayor would have faced to make the city a better place to live.
- Have students draw a scene in a large northern city between 1830 and 1860.
