The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Change Immigrants came to America -- especially from Ireland and Germany -- to begin new lives.
- Read aloud the letter on page 426 and ask students why they think immigrants would suffer such hardships to begin a new life in America.
- Explain that when many immigrants came to America, they lived in big cities like New York. Tell students many of these immigrants were poor farmers. Ask them to discuss what difficulties they might have had once they settled in America.

Check for Understanding
- Ask students to write a journal entry of an immigrant on the day before he or she arrives in New York City.
- Have students draw an illustration that shows what it was like for an immigrant living in New York City.
