The Big Idea
Framework Concepts: Culture and Values Most white southerners owned no slaves, yet they defended slavery to preserve a possible way of life and to reject interference from the North.

Draw students' attention to the white people who lived in the South who did not own slaves. Ask them if they think these people were for or against slavery and explain their answers.

Check for Understanding

Divide the class into several groups. Explain that each group will be creating a skit showing some part of life for individuals living in the "other South." After students have finished their skits, have each group perform for the rest of the class.
Have students draw a post card that shows life on a small farm in the South.
