Lesson at a Glance
Chapter 14, Lesson 2: Life on the New Frontier (pp. 345-349)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Change Life on the new frontier was dangerous and hard.
- Read aloud the introduction about Amy Fowler on page 345 and ask students to discuss why they think the Fowlers became pioneers. Then have students predict what they think the life for the Fowlers will be like once they settle in Kentucky. Record their predictions and revise or add to them after they read the chapter.
- Locate the Appalachian Mountains on a map and have students show the area where the pioneers settled once the Wilderness Road was constructed. Make a flow chart with the following three boxes: frontier station, town, large town. Help students describe the types of businesses or buildings in each stage of settlement and write them in the boxes.
