Lesson at a Glance
Chapter 13, Lesson 2: Jefferson and National Unity (pp. 320-323)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Change and Conflict Fighting together in a war against Great Britain created feelings of nationalism in the United States.
- Ask each student to think of his or her favorite school, college or pro sports team. Have each student think of a time his or her team played a rival team. Have each student recall how he or she felt after the game was over and how it felt to be surrounded by fans that felt the same way. Tell students that in a similar way, Americans united in their feelings of nationalism, or belonging to the same country, after they experienced the War of 1812.
