The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Change and Culture Literature, art, national symbols and national holidays reminded Americans of their common heritage.
- Discuss with students their school colors, mascot, and other symbols or stories that make them proud of their school. Then talk about how Americans have symbols, heroes, and holidays that are uniquely our own.
Ask students why they think national songs, poems, heroes, and holidays make people proud to be Americans.

Check for Understanding
- Ask students to pretend they are either an artist, poet, writer, sculptor, or songwriter that lived when our country first began. Then have them use their talent to create a symbol or celebrate a hero from our past that made citizens proud to be an American.
