Lesson at a Glance
Chapter 10, Lesson 3: A New British Policy (pp. 247-253)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Conflict The colonists united in anger when Great Britain began to tax the colonies.
- Talk about taxes that we pay today. Discuss how the tax money is used and whether or not students think taxes are fair.
- Remind students that before the Seven Years' War, the colonies were not taxed. After the war, Great Britain was in great debt. Ask them what they think Great Britain might have done to raise money, and how the colonies might react to what the British might do.

Check for Understanding
- Ask students to write a newspaper article imagining what happened at the First Continental Congress. Remind them as they write to ask themselves the five questions of newspaper writing: who, what, where, when, and why.
- Have students work together to create a timeline mural entitled "The Colonies Unite." Mark years on the timeline from 1760 to 1775. Have them illustrate the timeline with incidents such as the Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre as well as the meeting of the First Continental Congress.
